Ohio Dominican Tutoring Center's AI Policy

Given the prevalence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in college students, this policy is intended to help students and faculty make sound decisions regarding AI and tutoring at ºÚÁÏÉç. The Tutoring Center believes that AI cannot replace a human’s ability to think critically, creatively, and analytically. While AI can be a beneficial tool, it cannot replace human connection and the ability to learn. We care more about the learning process and comprehension of course materials through conversation, questioning, and working with one another towards discovery.

Even so, we acknowledge the ever-changing developments of AI and that they have impacted college education and learning. AI can complement the learning process and can help with the initial steps in the writing process or studying but should not serve as a replacement. Questions our tutors will ask include:

How and why is the student using AI?
What can we do to help learn without the use of AI?
What are your professor’s guidelines when using AI?

We understand that different fields of study have varying permissions and expectations regarding AI. With that in mind, our policy states that students must come to their appointments with the knowledge of their professors’ AI policies so that the tutors know how to best help them. We, as tutors, will support the professors’ policies regarding AI permission, use, and to what extent AI is allowed. If there is no policy, we will assume AI is prohibited in the class. Depending on the class, AI usage may violate ODU’s academic integrity standards. As such, our tutors are trained to assume AI is not allowed unless it is in writing by the professor in the syllabus.

We encourage conversations with the tutors regarding AI and the ways it can be beneficial or harmful. AI can be helpful in finding keywords for research, grammar, and generating study questions. However, AI can be incorrect in what it claims as fact, citations, and it is often vague. In the Tutoring Center, we require the use of AI to be ethical with the permission of the course instructor.

The Tutoring Center is not responsible for detecting all instances of AI usage. We do not run papers through any AI detection software. Students are responsible for following their professors’ AI policies.
